Sun awareness – Stay safe in the sun

In as many as four out of five cases, skin cancer is a preventable disease, so we've put together a few hints and tips on how to stay safe in the sun.

Nothing beats a cover up Sunscreen cannot give you 100% protection. It is no substitute for staying in the shade, wearing close -weave clothing (e.g. cotton), a broad-brimmed hat and a pair of quality UV sunglasses.

Get the factor right
Use a high-protection sunscreen. For you, SPF 30 is our recommendation. For kids it should be SPF 50+. Keep babies and very young children out of direct sunlight altogether.

Get your timing right
Skin needs time to absorb sunscreen. Put a generous layer on about 15 to 30 minutes before going out. Reapply frequently at least every two hours, as it can come off when swimming or by sweating.

Hair loss is as common in women as it is in men.

LA SCIENCE: Follicle Stimulating Shampoo and Anti Hair Loss Serum

A woman’s hair is her crowning glory and not only can thinning hair be distressing, it can often really knock
confidence and self esteem. Women are more susceptible to many more external factors that can result in temporary and permanent hair-loss. It can be a regular side effect of taking ordinary medicines such as ibuprofen, antidepressants and blood pressure medication.
As well as being hereditary, hair loss is proven to be a result of common complaints such stress, poor diet, environmental pollutants, anaemia, hormonal imbalance, the menopause polycystic ovaries, post-pregnancy or an inactive thyroid.
Hair thinning and loss of hair is very traumatic, so it is important to create the best conditions to maintain a healthy head of hair. Scalp hairs grow at a rate of approximately 1.25cm per month.
After a resting phase of around 90 days, new hair replaces the old hair which has been shed. Most individuals lose between 50-100 hairs a day (This need not be alarming as the average head of hair has 100,000 individual shafts of hair.)
Hair-loss takes place over several years and by the time many women realise that their hair has stopped growing, the hair loss is already in a progressive state.

First, it is important to understand the cause of cystic acne. The designation of Grade IV acne is given after cysts have formed; these acne lesions are caused by the same factors as less serious acne lesions. There is an over production of sebaceous secretion and wax-like plugging of the hair follicle/ sebaceous duct that traps a mix of bacteria (including P. Acne, S. Aureus, S. Epidermitis, and other surface flora).

Until recent years UVA was considered to have very few, if any, deleterious effects and so was of little academic interest because UVA rays don’t cause the acute "sunburns" we remember as red, painful, and possibly with blisters, etc. They are caused by UVB rays. Dermatology and medical researchers have known for years of the familiar effects of UVB radiation (290-320 nm) on human skin. UVA radiation is not safe, and many of the harmful effects produced by UVB radiation are also seen with exposure to UVA radiation.

So what causes sun damage?

Sun damage is caused by frequent exposure to damaging (UV) rays, UV is an undetected form of radiation emitted by the sun. There are two types of UV rays, UVA and UVB. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and are the major source of early ageing and skin cancer. UVB rays primarily access the surface of the skin and are key source of sunburn.

What can I do to help?
