Permanent cosmetics are a form of cosmetic tattooing, in which hypoallergenic pharmaceutical grade pigments are introduced into the skin in order to create a shadow of colour that mimics the most perfectly applied makeup in soft natural tones of colour.  Because the pigment sits in the skin the effect remains with you 24 hours a day and gradually fades over time.

What happens at a treatment?  How long does it take?

There are several forms to complete with your technician, where any potential concerns can be discussed and your procedure can be fully explained.
Your medical history will be checked and any allergy testing reviewed. 
Colour and design will be decided according to your individual colouring and face / eye / lip / brow shape, and the area is treated first to numb the skin.
The shape when you are fully satisfied will be "set" with a light "pass" using the machine and handpiece mentioned above.  Single use sterile needles are used, and the colour is then gradually enhanced in several layers.  The entire process can take between 1 and 3 hours depending on the individual and treatment area.
The colour will be definite and darker than the final healed result immediately after treatment.  You will however be able to continue with normal activities straight away.  There may be some puffiness or tenderness.
The colour fades over a period of days and the area will heal like a scab in the colour used which will flake naturally.  It takes 4 – 6 weeks for it to fully heal and if necessary a retouch procedure will be offered as part of the initial cost within 3 months to adjust any colour or shape variation to your satisfaction.
It is extremely important to follow pre and post procedure advice, which maximises results and lengthens the life of your permanent cosmetics.

How long do the results last?

The procedure can be termed permanent as the pigment sits under the skin and remain 24 hours a day.  It may also be referred to as semi permanent in the respect that it fades over a period of years.  Traditional tattoo inks are not as suitable for this facial work due to the risk of migration of the colour, and permanent makeup pigment is implanted slightly higher in the dermal layer of the skin. 
Fading of your cosmetics is dependent on many factors such as skin hydration and sun exposure but with proper aftercare can remain for several years.  Hilary offers a maintenance procedure after a year to 18 months to boost the colour and crisp the outlines of your makeup.
